Born 1888 to Thomas and Agnes Ratcliffe. In 1901 he was a 13 year-old pork butchers assistant living with his mother at 6 Oxford Street, Alvaston, with his siblings; Ernest aged 11, Thomas H 8, Elizabeth 7, Agnes E 5.
On the 1911 census there is recorded a Samuel Foster at Wellington Lines, Aldershot.
At the time of his death his address was given as 27 Eden Street, Alvaston.
